My cousin and I were discussing on ways the Government can save money and at the same time discipline the citizens. Because of the global economic downturn everyone is looking for ways that could help save the Government money and lower the deficits. Our prisons are overflowing with prisoners and this is one that is causing the Government to spend a whole lot of money to maintain these prisoners. We all love this Great Nation and want to see it bounce back to it’s originality, “The American Dream.” Where we live prosperous and happy.
There are a lot of prisoners who just sit behind bars doing nothing constructively and costing the Government money. I am referring to prisoners like people who have done crime not related to murder or rape. Those latter two I just mention deserve to be locked up and throw away the keys; but prisoners who steal, do minor drugs issues, or other related crime should be punish for these crimes by taking different disciplinary action.
The Government should send them out to work under monitor instead of just have them locked them up and spending money to maintain them for example like on food, health care, and whatever else necessities these prisoners might in need of. Because to be honest, I believe some prisoners who have difficult lives rather be in jail where they have their needs met than being out and having nothing. Many of these crimes are done out of lack of needs rather than out of criminality.
Our idea is that instead of the Government locked up these prisoners for as long as their sentence permitted and they just sit in prison doing nothing while the Government take care of them. The Government should use those prison facilities and turn them into a disciplinary lodging place. Or if not, invest some money and build new facilities. Those prisoners who steal, do drugs or related crimes and are sentence to prison should go to these facilities in which the Government allow them to go out and work while being under monitor and return at the end of their working day.
They will still be prisoners but in a way that, instead of sitting in prison doing nothing and making the government spend money on them, they should be working and bringing in money. The Government should then use that money to help maintain the facility where they lodged, for food and medical treatment. And to those who have stole should pay back the money that they have stolen.
Doing this will not only save the Government money, but will also discipline them and maybe even make them more responsible and aware of what they have done and understand there will always be consequences that they may not like and perhaps make them better citizens. In that way they will know that when they do these crimes that they will not just sit in prison doing nothing and being taken care of and costing the Government money.
They will know that if they caught in these crimes, they will have to serve their time by working and paying back the money and also paying for the facility they will be occupying and not just sit in prison doing nothing. If they like easy way out and dislike working, this kind of punishment could serve to discipline them.
Because if you notice many of these prisoners after they have been released , go back out and commit the same crime and return to prison again. So taking these actions might be good to save the Government money as well as paving the way for less of these crimes and most of these citizens will be well discipline. Knowing what it’s like to have something and having it taken away / or stolen from them.
